Thank you to the dogs I have shared my life with.
I find myself reflecting on the incredible impact our furry companions have had on our lives. I honour those beloved pets who have passed, and I am forever grateful for the lessons they taught me, the comfort they provided, and the love they shared unconditionally.
My heart is filled with fond memories of my boy, Bradstock, who passed away at the end of last year. Brad was more than just a companion β he was my greatest teacher.
His life journey, filled with challenges, led me to explore new ways of supporting him to find peace and relaxation. This path took me to Zoopharmacognosy and ACE (Animal Centred Education) β two life-changing discoveries that now form the foundation of my work. Without Bradstock, I would never have stepped onto this healing path, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
Of course, Bradstock wasnβt the only dog to leave pawprints on my heart. I also remember with deep affection:
Gemma, Lou Lou, Oscar and Trapper.
Each of them shared different seasons of my life and brought their own unique energy, personality and unconditional love. The memories we made together still make me smile. Whether it was quiet cuddles, playful moments or simply walking side by side β their presence made my life richer.
Dogs are so much more than pets. They are emotional anchors, loyal companions, and for many, a lifeline. Their presence is especially powerful for people who are lonely, elderly, disabled or struggling with mental health challenges.
According to the Mental Health Foundation, pet guardianship β especially of dogs β is linked to reduced stress levels and increased happiness. Studies show that just 10 minutes with a dog can significantly reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and boost serotonin and oxytocin β the chemicals responsible for feeling calm and connected.
For those who feel isolated, a dog offers structure, affection, and a reason to venture out into the world. Theyβre non-judgemental companions who give their love freely and faithfully β something that can make an enormous difference in someone's life.
As we remember our dogs today, letβs take a moment to honour the lessons theyβve taught us:
To be present.
To enjoy the simple things.
To give and receive love without condition.
To my beloved Bradstock, thank you for leading me to a deeper understanding of peace and healing. And to Gemma, Lou Lou, Oscar, and Trapper β thank you for your input into my learning over the years and your companionship and joy.
To all dog guardians out there β today is a reminder of just how much our dogs do for us, and how truly lucky we are to have shared our lives with them.
To all the dogs weβve loved and lost β your memory lives on in every wag, bark, and moment of quiet comfort we find in nature, in stillness, and in love.
You were more than pets.
You were family.
You were teachers.
And you are missed β every single day. ππΎ
